The weeks after the awards…

What a busy few months we have had!

The 7th annual Blas na hEireann, The Irish Food Awards were held at the beginning of October. We were once again honoured to welcome the very best of the Irish food industry’s producers to meet with press and buyers from across Ireland, the UK, Europe and even as far as Dubai.

In the days and weeks since the awards were announced we have been working with our finalists and winners to help them make the most of their win, be it through including their winning logo on their packaging or in advertising or putting them in touch with industry contacts who are reaching out to us. We are also making sure that our list of finalists & winners is shared with the press and trade buyers who couldn’t be here with us during the events. It’s a busy few weeks when we keep our heads down to business!

We will continue to work on behalf of our finalists in the coming months and one of the things we are working on is sharing news with the Irish food community. If you hear of opportunities, important information, interesting speakers or anything at all you think your colleagues in the food industry should know then get in touch.

2014 Supreme Champion Winners – Blast & Wilde

A Meath-based family-owned food company specialising in natural flavours, which was only established a year ago, has been awarded the very top honour at this year’s prestigious Blas na hÉireann, The Irish Food Awards, which were held in Dingle, Co. Kerry over the weekend – the largest annual gathering of indigenous food producers anywhere in the country.irish_food_awards00001

Blast and Wilde, which is based in Slane and run by Graham and Bernie Canning, was chosen as the Bord Bia-sponsored Blas Supreme Champion 2014 from a huge entry of more than 2,000 products submitted for consideration at the hugely-acclaimed competition and showcase for Irish food producers. The Phoenix Cinema in Dingle, where the winners were announced, was abuzz with excitement following a hugely successful three days of the Dingle Peninsula Food Festival which hosts the awards and celebrates the vitality and vibrancy of the Irish food sector.

‘We are absolutely thrilled,’ said Bernie Canning of Blast and Wilde. ‘We only got the business off the ground a year ago and since then we have been making flavoured butter including Roast Garlic and Pesto, Black Olive Tapenade, and Chilli, Lime and Coriander. Graham and I both have a passion for food and flavours and we are honoured to have taken to the top award at Blas as well as first, second and third in the dairy butter category.’

Chairman of The Irish Food Awards, Artie Clifford congratulated the winners, saying the number of entries broke all records this year. He said that a win at Blas opens doors to producers who want to get established or expand into new markets.

“Blas na h-Éireann, The Irish Food Awards, is about recognising passionate, dedicated producers who are serious about marketing their fantastic Irish food and drink into markets at home and around the globe. Everyone who took part is a winner – having reached the finals already puts them at the top of their industry,” said Artie.

Majority of Food SMEs Seriously Challenged by Financial and Distribution Issues

Tuesday 13 May 2014.  A survey of Irish food producers has found that 70% of small to medium sized producers feel that a lack of financial advice and support is the biggest challenge they face in growing their businesses. The survey, conducted on behalf of the Blas na hEireann, Irish Food Awards, also found that for 65% of producers distribution is a major problem; not only nationally but also internationally.

 The findings of this survey, titled “Producer Power in 2014’, were announced at the launch of the 7thAnnual  Blas na hEireann 2014 Awards, which took place at The Westbury Hotel, Dublin, on Tuesday 13 May, where Minister Simon Coveney, a former producer himself, made the opening address.

The Blas na hEireann, Irish Food Awards accreditation is the largest competition of its kind in Ireland attracting over 2,000 entries annually. It was set up to reward and support the best of Irish produce and the passionate, talented producers behind it. Award winners get to display the Blas na hEireann symbol on their products which previous, independent research shows leads to an increase in sales.  All entries are blind tasted by a team of over 350 judges in two tranches, including top chefs, journalists, industry experts, inspired home cooks and academics.  The judging system was developed and is overseen each year by Dr Joe Kerry and his team from the School of Food and Nutritional Science at UCC.   The Award winners in over 80 food categories will be presented at an Awards Ceremony in Dingle, Co Kerry on Saturday 4 October, to co-incide with the peninsula’s hugely popular food and wine festival.  In addition Bord Bia sponsors two key awards, The Blas na hEireann Supreme Champion and the Best Artisan producer, which will also be presented on the night.  Last year a chocolatier from Mullingar, Co Westmeath,  Olivia Curran of ‘An Olivia Chocolates’, took the top gong, and has seen business more than double since then. 

Government Agencies scored very well in the survey, with producers, small and large, recognising the support that they get from the County Enterprise Boards, Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, with Teagasc, BIM and Udaras ranking well within their specific areas.

 “Unfortunately the problem seems to be that the impact of Agency support is not being fully leveraged because of difficulties accessing financial advice and support on the one hand and being able gain distribution to new markets on the other” said Chairman of Blas na hEireann, Artie Clifford, a former producer in the seafood sector. 

 

 “While these issues are at the forefront of producers’ concerns, they are largely being overlooked.  Blas would be delighted to work with Government agencies to address these issues swiftly in order to support the food producers that have inspired and fuelled this fast growing and vitally important sector of our economy.”

 

For smaller producers in particular, financial issues are not just about accessing additional funding, they are as much about getting paid on time and been given fairer credit terms by the larger retailers.

 

“Agencies on both a local and national should be in a position to give financial advice to producers on a one to one basis; everything from how to develop business plans, work out production costs, forecast accurately the amount of financial investment needed for expansion, as well as how to approach and work with financial institutions and retailers in order to guarantee the best on-going results” Clifford continued.  “Financial assistance through the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) and increasing the offer of R&D tax credits for the self-employed would also be extremely useful.”

 

“In addition LEOs could look at the feasibility of setting up localised distribution depots, where smaller shipments could be consolidated” added Clifford.  “In the meantime our Blas na hEireann Producer Forum encourages members to reach out to other producers for help with distribution logistics by sharing resources, which has worked well in the past.”

 

Other questions in the survey included asking producers to list ‘quality accreditations’ that could benefit their business most.  Winning A Blas na hEireann Award ranked highest of all, almost double that of the next nearest Accreditation.

Entries open for Blas 2014

As always we will be searching for the very best of food and drink produced on the island of Ireland. All Irish producers, North and South, are invited to submit products that are commercially available to the public.

Once again this year we are offering entrants an opportunity to avail of an early bird rate of €35 per entry if entered before 30th April. Any entries received after this date and up until 17th June will be at a charge of €45 per product.

Westmeath Chocolatier is Supreme Champion at 2013 Blas Awards

A Mullingar-based chocolatier and manufacturer of luxury Belgian chocolates has been awarded the top honour at this year’s Blas na hEireann Irish Food Awards,

which were held in Dingle, Co. Kerry over the weekend.‘An Olivia Chocolates’ was chosen as the Blas Supreme Champion from a huge entry of more than 2,000 products submitted for consideration at the prestigious and hugely-acclaimed competition and showcase for Irish food producers.

Run by Olivia Curran – a self-confessed chocaholic – and based at Monilea, Mullingar, An Olivia Chocolates produces luxury handmade Belgian chocolates which are handcrafted to have the maximum visual effect and taste sensation. Olivia’s motto is ‘You dream it, I make it.’“I’m absolutely delighted; I’m pinching myself” said Olivia following the announcement. “I launched the business on Easter Sunday 2010 and since then it has taken leaps and strides. It’s such an honour to get this recognition. I am so grateful to everyone at Blas and to my family and the Westmeath Enterprise Board for their support,” she said.


The award winners were announced at this year’s annual Dingle Peninsula Food and Wine Festival. The decision of the adjudicators was revealed at a gala ceremony in the Phoenix Cinema in the west Kerry town on Saturday evening, the venue lending much credibility to the notion that this year’s Blas awards are the ‘Oscars’ for food producers.

 Chairman of the Blas Awards, Artie Clifford said that this year’s 2013 Blas na hEireann, National Irish Food Awards had a record number of entries making it the most competitive Blas ever. “Blas is about recognising passionate, dedicated producers who are serious about marketing their fantastic Irish food and drink into markets at home and around the globe,” said Artie. “Winning at Blas means double digit growth for some producers, particularly those who use the Blas quality mark. We know from research that not only is the symbol widely recognised by shoppers, but it also encourages them to buy products that carry the Blas accreditation. It is their guarantee of top class quality,” he added.

In addition to our Producer Development Programme; a series of one day seminars for small to medium sized businesses, we have created a platform for you to share ideas and thoughts on our ‘Producers Forum’. This is a practical tool to both to enable you to share resources amongst yourselves and for our expertise to inform yours.

We hope that this online forum can help you, for example, to share information about logistics, production facilities and the financial and practical aid that is available for you. If our panel of experts can also help directly with some of your queries or to point you in the right direction, please ask through the forum, and we will do our best to help. 69% of shoppers influenced by an award win

Research conducted by Empathy Research in September 2012 found that 69% of shoppers would be influenced to purchase a product by the presence of a sticker indicating it had won an award such as an Blas na hEireann Award.Respondents were also most aware of the Blas Awards, with a large majority indicating that they had heard of the awards.

Now, new research conducted by Behaviour & Attitudes in January 2013 has confirmed earlier findings, concluding that awareness of the Blas is significantly higher than for other quality food marks!
